Percentages

FactUse
x%x\% of yy = y%y\% of xx8%8\% of 50 = 50%50\% of 8 = 4
Successive changes a%,b%a\%, b\% → a+b+ab100%a + b + \tfrac{ab}{100}\%+20%+20\% then −20%-20\% → −4%-4\%
If price rises r%r\%, consumption must fall r100+r×100%\tfrac{r}{100 + r}\times100\% to keep spending fixed+25%+25\% → cut 20%20\%
Profit % is on cost price; discount % is on marked price

Ratio, proportion, averages, mixtures

  • Combine ratios by making the common term equal (A:B=2:3A:B = 2:3, B:C=4:5B:C = 4:5 → 8:12:158:12:15).
  • Average =sum/count= \text{sum}/\text{count}; work with sums when items are added or removed.
  • Alligation: mixing quantities with values aa and bb to get mean mm needs the ratio (b−m):(m−a)(b - m) : (m - a).

Time, work, speed

  • Work: rates add. If A takes aa days and B takes bb, together aba+b\tfrac{ab}{a + b} days. A pipe that empties subtracts its rate.
  • Speed: km/h×518=m/s\text{km/h} \times \tfrac5{18} = \text{m/s}. Average speed for equal distances at uu and vv is the harmonic mean 2uvu+v\tfrac{2uv}{u + v}, not u+v2\tfrac{u + v}{2}.
  • Trains: crossing a pole covers the train's length; crossing a platform covers length + platform. Relative speed: add for opposite directions, subtract for the same direction.

Interest

SI=PRT100,ACI=P(1+R100)T,CI−SI (2 yrs)=P(R100)2.\text{SI} = \frac{PRT}{100}, \qquad A_{CI} = P\left(1 + \frac{R}{100}\right)^T, \qquad \text{CI} - \text{SI}\ (2\text{ yrs}) = P\left(\frac{R}{100}\right)^2.

Powers, logarithms, series

  • aman=am+na^m a^n = a^{m+n}, (am)n=amn(a^m)^n = a^{mn}, a−n=1/ana^{-n} = 1/a^n, a1/n=ana^{1/n} = \sqrt[n]{a}.
  • log⁡(xy)=log⁡x+log⁡y\log(xy) = \log x + \log y, log⁡xk=klog⁡x\log x^k = k\log x, log⁡ab=log⁡blog⁡a\log_a b = \tfrac{\log b}{\log a}, log⁡aa=1\log_a a = 1.
  • AP: nn-th term a+(n−1)da + (n-1)d, sum n2(2a+(n−1)d)\tfrac n2(2a + (n-1)d); GP: arn−1ar^{n-1}, sum arn−1r−1a\tfrac{r^n - 1}{r - 1}; ∑k=1nk=n(n+1)2\sum_{k=1}^n k = \tfrac{n(n+1)}{2}, ∑k2=n(n+1)(2n+1)6\sum k^2 = \tfrac{n(n+1)(2n+1)}{6}.
  • Series puzzles: look at differences, ratios, squares/cubes, n(n+1)n(n+1), primes, alternating patterns.

Counting and probability

The counting and probability pages of the main syllabus cover this in depth. In GA expect (nr)\binom nr, arrangements with repetition, dice and coin problems.

Mensuration and geometry

ShapeArea / volumePerimeter / surface
Circleπr2\pi r^22πr2\pi r
Triangle12bh\tfrac12bh; Heron s(s−a)(s−b)(s−c)\sqrt{s(s-a)(s-b)(s-c)}a+b+ca + b + c
Equilateral triangle34a2\tfrac{\sqrt3}{4}a^23a3a
Cylinderπr2h\pi r^2h2πr(r+h)2\pi r(r + h)
Cone13πr2h\tfrac13\pi r^2hπr(r+l)\pi r(r + l)
Sphere43πr3\tfrac43\pi r^34πr24\pi r^2

Scaling lengths by kk scales areas by k2k^2 and volumes by k3k^3. Sum of interior angles of an nn-gon: (n−2)180°(n-2)180°; diagonals: n(n−3)2\tfrac{n(n-3)}{2}.

Clocks and calendars

  • Angle between hands at H:MH{:}M: ∣30H−5.5M∣|30H - 5.5M| (take 360°360° minus it if over 180°180°).
  • A normal year shifts the weekday by 1, a leap year by 2. Leap years: divisible by 4, except centuries not divisible by 400.

Data interpretation

Read units and bases carefully: "percentage of what?", "lakh vs thousand", "growth over the previous year vs over the base year". Approximate aggressively when options are far apart.
